Clove Bud essential oil is distilled from the flower buds of the Clove tree which is native to the Moluccas or Maluku Islands in Indonesia, but now cultivated in many regions around the world. The tree has glossy green leaves and rosy-pink buds, which turn to fragrant red flowers and purple fruits. The tree produces 3 different forms of essential oil, Clove Leaf Oil, Clove Stem Oil and Clove Bud Oil. All three are used extensively in the pharmaceutical industry as a source of eugenol. Clove Bud Oil is used in aromatherapy, as it has the lowest levels of eugenol, and is therefore considered safest. For many centuries Clove Buds were chewed to help relieve toothache, and the oil is still used as a pain relieving remedy in dentistry today.

Clove oil has strong antiseptic properties which are useful in preventing colds and flu, and it is often used in soothing, warming aromatherapy blends for joints and muscles, and as an anti-fatigue treatment. It is also a popular essential oil to use for festive room fragrancing at Christmas time.

Historically it is believed that the people of Penang (among the Spice Islands) were free from epidemics until the sixteenth century when Dutch conquerors destroyed the clove trees that flourished on the island. Many of the islanders died from the epidemics that followed. Clove Bud essential oil shares a lot of the therapeutic characteristics of Tea Tree oil, so regardless of whether the folklore is true, there can be no doubt of its therapeutic value.
